In the 4DStory "Nightshades" at Nightshades.fans Bob's Dad is a retired US Navy SEAL and has buddies still in the Teams. Bu the also has a few from the past that he grew up with. See, his Dad too was SEAL, back when they were just transitioning from being better known as UDT Frogmen. This blouse and hat belonged to Bob's grandpa. Now there are a few things to note, first of all it's one of his first uniforms. Bob's grandpa retired from the Navy as a Master Chief Petty Officer. Yeah, he wasn't one to be messed with!
Second, this uniform is from before he became a Navy SEAL. The United States Navy's Sea, Air, Land (SEAL) teams, also known as SEALs, were established in 1962. The UDT (Underwater Demolition Teams) which the SEALs were created from were established in World War II (WWII) specifically in 1943. The first BUDS class was not in 1943 it was in January 1962. The UDTs, were merged into the SEAL teams and continued to operate until the early 1980s. With the establishment of SEAL Team Six in the early 1980s, the UDTs were officially disbanded and all UDT personnel were transferred to the SEALs. This class was made up of members of the original Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT), the precursor to the SEALs. BUD/S is the rigorous and demanding training program that all individuals must go through in order to become a SEAL.
Bob's grandpa went through the very first BUDS class in 1962 while he was still a 3rd class boatswain's mate on the USS Okanogan. USS Okanogan (APA/LPA-220) was a Haskell -class attack transport that saw service with the US Navy in World War II , the Korean War and the Vietnam War. She was of the VC2-S-AP5 Victory ship design type and named after Okanogan County, Washington. She was decommissioned 5 February 1970, with delivery to the Maritime Administration (MARAD) 20 April 1971. Okanogan was laid up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, Suisun Bay Group, Benicia, California.
